Park
Eravikulam National Park - The Eravikulam
national park is located at a distance if about 17km from
the famous tourist destination of Munnar. The national
park is in the midst of picturesque surrounding. The
national park is on the Western Ghats with the highest
point being Anamudi at a height of 2695 meters. A tower at
the center of the park gives it a majestic look and adds
to the attractiveness of the park. The national park was
set up as a preservation center of an endangered species
of goat, the Nilgiri Thar. The total area of the park is
97 sq km and is home to the largest number of Nilgiri Thar
in the world. The beauty of the Eravikulam National Park
is its rolling hills, undulating grasslands and beautiful
patches of natural forests. The national park is home to a
wide variety of flora and fauna. An amazing sight awaits
tourists in the tower inside the wildlife sanctuary with
the slopes seems like a velvet lawn. A bluish purple
colored flower Neelkurinji, which blooms once
in 12 years, gives a purple luster to the sanctuary. It
seems as if the sanctuary is a purple paradise. Though the
special attraction of the national park is the Nilgiri
Thar, other animals like wild bear, elephants, tigers,
langur, gaur, loan tailed macaque, mongoose, snakes, sloth
bear and various kinds of reptiles. The largest moth in
the world, the Atlas Moth is found in the Eravikulam
national park.
