Sabarimala Temple

The Sabarimala temple is one of Kerala’s most pious and prestigious temples. The temple is situated at an altitude 914 meters above the sea level and is dedicated to lord Aiyappa who is said to be the union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu and legends says that Lord Parasurama had enshrines Lord Aiyappa in foot of these hills and a mention of this is also included in the Ramayana.

The temple plays an important role in combining the Shaivite and Vaishnavite branches of Hinduism. The walk to reach the temple is strenuous and tiring as it passes through think forests of the Sahyadri Mountains. However, it has been made better for the large number of Pilgrimages who visit the country yearly.

The temple tour is unique due to this nature trek that is required to make it to this temple. The temple is open only between the months of November and January besides two days of the other nine months. The pilgrims follow a strict discipline of fast and prayer before embarking on their journey to the temple. This past is usually followed for a period of 41 days and during the fast and the pilgrimage the pilgrims are called Aiyappa and have to replicate the nature of the lord to purify one self and to wash of the sins that have been committed by him.

Another fascinating feature of the temple is that the pilgrims are mostly only men and entry is strictly prohibited for those ladies between the age of 10 and 55. The tour gives you an opportunity to meditate and reach a spiritual side of you that you never thought existed. Get to know more about this temple during Sabarimala Temple Tours.
