Kerala is all about culture, heritage, art, music and celebration. You can visit Kerala at any time throughout the year. Dancing is one way to do so. The Kerala Dances reflect the culture and tradition that has been preserved for years. Some of the dances include the epics and the stories of gods. All they do is enact the incidences that occurred in the mythological past. There are various types of dances in Kerala that are performed.

The dances are performed in all over the state. You can travel to any destination in Kerala and visit any of the festival; you will be able to see the colorful and enthusiastic dance-performances for sure. The dances are mainly the folk ones which are performed for a particular occasion and are inclusive of basic musical instruments. To experience the magic of such dances, all you have to do is travel to Kerala and join the festival and join the merry-making bandwagon.

Folk Dances of Kerala India - There are about fifty beautiful folk dances in Kerala. The most ancient and popular dance is known as, “Mudiyettu”. The performers in the dance sequence enact the stories of Lord Shiva’s wife, Goddess “Bhagavati”. The dancers praise the Goddess with various “Mudras” or formations and also tell the story of the Goddess’ victory over various evils and demons.

One of the ancient dances that are performed for the social cause is “Kaliyattam” or the “Theyyam”. The dances are performed in every village by the dancers for the safety of the family and other residents in village. The dance is named as “Theyyam” as it is performed in each “Thera” meaning village; and is named as “Kaliyattam”, as the dance if performed in front of Goddess Kali, which means protection and safety. There are various other dances like Thiruvathirakali, Kolkali, Mamangam, Parichamuttukali, Patakam, Poothamkali, Thappu-mealakali and Kuravar Kali are performed in Kerala.
