History of Kerala
Kerala has had a rich historic past and there are many
evidences to support this. The early inhabitants of Kerala
are believed to be ting Negrito People who were basically
hunter gatherers. The people who came after ting Negritos
were Austriches. These people had originated from the
current day Australian Aborigines. These people first laid
the foundation of Indian civilization. Get to know more
about History of Kerala during a tour to Kerala.
After them the next inhabitants were the Dravidians.
They borrowed many cultural traits from Negritos and
Dravidians but they strongly believed in worshipping
mother goddess.
The people who contributed significantly in the
proto-historic era were the Aryans. In spite of this the
Dravidian culture was successful in leaving a strong
imprint on the Keralian culture. The first people who came
by ships to Kerala by sea route were Arabs and Jews. They
came to Kerala and established trading ports. The first
church in Kerala is believed to be founded by St. Thomas
in 52 AD. Vasco da Gama was the first sailor to explore a
sea route to the land of India from Europe. This was
really significant in the course of history of not only of
Kerala but for the whole of India. Vasco da Gama invaded
Calicut in 1498 AD. Calicut is near Kappad. The people who
came after Portuguese were Dutch people and then by the
French. The English were the last one to reach Kerala.
The result of all this is clearly evident from the
present day culture of Kerala. There is a complex mix of
people who inhabit the Kerala today. We can see people
belonging to various sects of Christianity, Hinduism and
Muslim living together. The state of Kerala came into
existence on 1st November 1946. This day is celebrated as
the 'Kerala piravi' which literally means Birth of
Kerala by the Keralian people. |
