City Palace Udaipur
The magnificent white City Palace located in the center of
Udaipur was built by Maharaja Udai Singh of the Rajput clan. It is the
largest palace complexes in Rajasthan made from granite marble and
surrounded by the Pichola Lake. The architecture is a blend of the
medieval Chinese and European styles and the palace encompasses a number
of beautiful fountains, gardens and buildings in its compound. The
Palace has the Hati Pol or the Elephant gate at its entrance leading to
the most beautiful Jagdish temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. There is a
Tripolia or triple gate beyond which is an arena where elephant fights
were staged in the past. The interiors of the Palace have luxurious
suites with attached balconies and octagonal towers with spectacular
views of the lake and the city from the upper floors. Raj Aangan is the
oldest part of the palace and the main part of the palace is now
converted into a museum. The Krishna Vilas, Mor Chowk, Manak Mahal,
Zenana Mahal, Dilkusha Mahal and the Suraj Gokhala are rooms with
beautiful miniature paintings, colorful stained glasses and art
galleries with Mewar paintings displayed for the tourists to acquaint
them with our ancient culture and traditions. The Moti Mahal and Sheesh
Mahal have lavish décor and mirror work respectively. There is a
Hawa Mahal and the Amar Villas is the highest point with wonderful
gardens, fountains, terraces and towers and provide magnificent views of
the city and lake.
Location
Udaipur in Rajasthan is easily accessible by railway which is only 4
kms away and connects the city with Jaipur, Ajmer, Delhi, Chittaur,
Ahmedabad and Jodhpur. Indian airlines connect Udaipur daily with
Mumbai, Delhi, Aurangabad, Jaipur and Jodhpur. Udaipur is connected by
the National Highway No.8 which makes it easily accessible via road to
all the important cities in India.
