Mehrang Fort Jodhpur Jodhpur in Rajasthan India, is a city that cannot be forgotten once you see its majestic sights. Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan and overlooks the stark beauty of the Thar Desert.

The name Jodhpur has entered the English language as 'Jodhpurs' - trousers worn for horse riding and equestrian events.

A historic city, Jodhpur was once the capital of Marwar state. The city of Jodhpur was established by Rao Jodha, a chieftain of the Rathore clan in 1459 A.D. Jodhpur town is an attractive sight with many houses painted blue in color, giving Jodhpur the title of the Blue City of Rajasthan. The city of Jodhpur is enclosed by a 10 Km long wall, which has 8 massive gates. The skyline of Jodhpur is dominated by the impressive Mehrangarh Fort, which is situated majestically atop a high hill.

Mehrangarh Fort: Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur is a giant structure built in the 15th century. Situated on a 125-meter high hill, Mehrangarh Fort has 4 gates and an approach road that curves along the hillside. The view of the blue painted walls of the town from the ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort is panoramic. Within the Mehrangarh Fort, there is a museum with weaponry, royal robes, furniture and artifacts. Beautifully decorated rooms in the royal apartments such as the Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal and Phool Mahal are evidence of the highly developed artistic skills of the painters of Mewar.

Umaid Bhawan Palace: Built by the Maharaja of Jodhpur as a famine relief project to provide employment to the residents of his drought stricken province in the early 20th century, the Umaid Bhawan Palace is a magnificent structure. Built in the Indo Saracenic style, with elements of Rajput and Victorian architecture, this grand palace made in sandstone is a currently a heritage hotel, a museum and the residence of the royal family of Jodhpur.

Jaswant Thada: The royal cenotaphs of the rulers of Jodhpur, the Jaswant Thada was constructed in 1899, to commemorate Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Made of white marble, this elegant structure is a graceful and dignified memorial to the previous rulers of Jodhpur.

Shopping in Jodhpur: Jodhpur has many busy and colorful markets. Girdikot and Sardar Market located in the center of the city and the shops around the main clock tower are great places to browse for clothing, arts and crafts, camel leather artifacts, furniture and souvenirs of your trip to Jodhpur.

You can wander through the narrow lanes and picturesque streets of Jodhpur town and enjoy the atmosphere of the city.
